📋 Every Christian desires to have the assurance of salvation- the certainty that when Christ returns or when death comes, one will go to be with the Lord Jesus in heaven.
One of John's primary purposes in writing his first letter is to affirm that God's people can have that assurance-to know beyond doubt that they are in a right relationship with God and headed for heaven. He says, "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."
John's letter points out some ways for us to know that we truly have eternal life as followers of Jesus Christ.
First, we have eternal life if we believe "in the name of the Son of God". There is no eternal life without a sincere life-surrendering faith in Jesus Christ that confesses him as God's Son, sent to be our Saviour and Lord.
Secondly, we have the assurance if we submit to Jesus as Lord and sincerely try to live by his principles and obey his commands (1 John 2:3).
The third way is if we love the Father and the Son rather than the world and depend on God's guidance and power to overcome the world's corrupting influence.
