👉🏼 (Reading: Jeremiah 2:5-8)
📜 "This is what the Lord says: What fault did your fathers find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves" Jeremiah 2:5 (NIV).
📋 One attitude which displeases God is his beloved children turning their back on him, forgetting his faithfulness and goodness to them. Today's focus scripture depicts God's displeasure at the negative attitude of the fathers of the Israelites towards him.
In the anchor verse, he questioned the children: "What fault did your fathers find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves". In clear terms, their fathers had broken their covenant with God, even though he had remained faithful to them. All of humanity has a natural pull towards pursuing their own selfish desires and forgetting God's goodness.
The verse highlights two reasons the fathers lost their devotion to God, which are also warnings for us today. First, they followed worthless idols. This means that they allowed other things in life to take God's place in providing them security and satisfaction. The verse describes the idols as "worthless" or of no value.
By following them, the people "became worthless themselves". They saw little value in their own lives and lost their purpose by allowing other things to take God's rightful place in their lives.
Secondly, they failed to ask, "Where is the Lord?" (v. 6), implying that they had lost awareness of his presence. Have you also lost awareness of God's presence in your life?
🔑 Key Lesson: God wants us to stay with him.
