Revelation 4:8 (KJV)
📋 The Greek word, hagios, means to be completely separated from and above all creation in character, purposes and completely separated from all evil. God is holy.
He is absolutely pure, perfect and complete. In our focus verse, the four beasts unceasingly praise him for his holiness: ".. and they rest not day and night saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come."
The repetition of Holy is extremely significant as it emphasizes God's absolute and supreme holiness-from eternity past to eternity yet to come (Isaiah 41:4). This character trait is God's primary quality and is repeated about God throughout the book of Revelations.
Holiness is the clear and the most obvious aspect of God's nature and character encountered immediately when in his awesome presence. Since holiness is an internal trait of God, his holiness will never change. His almighty power (Lord God Almighty) and eternal existence (which was, and is, and is to come) ensure that his holiness will triumph over all evil in human history and the universe.
God's holiness must therefore be recognized and proclaimed in churches--among God's people-just as it is in the heavens.
