👉🏼 (Reading: Ecclesiastes 1:1-18)
📜 "Meaningless! Meaningless! says the Teacher: Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless" Ecclesiastes 1:2 (NIV).
📋 Anything that is said to be meaningless is without any purpose or reason and therefore not worth doing or having. In our focus verse, the Teacher, Solomon, teaches us that everything in this world is meaningless: "Meaningless! Meaningless! says the Teacher. Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless. By this, he implies that all our activities on earth are, in the end, worthless when carried out apart from God's desires and purposes.
In fact, our very lives lack true purpose and fulfilment if we reject a personal relationship with God and deny his loving involvement in our lives. Another important point in Ecclesiastes is that creation itself also suffers from the meaninglessness and the corruption in the world. The Teacher's aim is to destroy the false hopes that people place in a complete secular worldview-one that does not include God.
He wants us to see the serious reality of evil, injustice and death, and to realize that life apart from God has no meaning and cannot produce true happiness. What then is the solution to this problem of meaninglessness? It is found through faith and trust in God. Knowing and depending on him is the only thing that makes life worthwhile.
We must look beyond temporary, earthly things and put our hope and efforts in eternal and heavenly purposes if we are to experience true meaning, joy and peace (3:12-14).
